Heartworm is a parasitic roundworm that spreads from dog to dog through mosquito bites. The worm
resides in the right ventricle of the heart, where it can do serious damage. The worm can also
end up in the eye, causing blindness, in the legs, causing paralysis, or in the brain, causing
seizures. Infected dogs show no symptoms until it's too late. Dogs can be infected anywhere
mosquitoes are found.
Give your pug a monthly dose of heartworm prevention medicine. Your vet can provide you with
a meat-flavored chewable pill like Heartguard or Proheart that offers protection against the worm.
Apply a topical solution, such as Revolution, to your pug's skin.
Keep your pug indoors when mosquito populations are high. Dogs are infected after bites from
infected mosquitoes; if you live near water, you might want to keep your pug indoors more often
in the summer, or make sure to apply more topical solution.
Ask your vet to perform an annual test for heartworm. The test is a quick and simple blood
test that will take only a minute.
